What is the SAT and why is it important?

The SAT comes from the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which is contracted by The College Board to create the test.

The SAT is just one factor in the admissions decision. Schools also consider your high school GPA, academic transcript, letters of recommendation, interviews and personal essays. The weight placed on SAT scores varies from school to school. Most colleges and universities will accept the ACT in lieu of the SAT.

What specifically does the SAT test?

There are 3 SAT sections–Math, Critical Reading, and Writing. The Writing section includes an essay, which–unlike the ACT - is not optional. Start to finish, the test will take you 3 hours and 45 minutes.

How is the SAT scored?

Each section is scored on a 200 to 800 point scale, making the "perfect" score 2400.

How do I register?

SAT registration deadlines fall approximately 5 weeks before each test date. To register by mail, fill out the registration form in the College Board's Bulletin for the SAT Program. You can get a free copy of this publication from your school's guidance counselor. Or you can call ETS at 609–771-7600 and they'll send you one free of charge. You can also register online at the College Board website.

Note:

Now that the results are out students must go to sat.collegeboard.org/practice and take a look at SAT Skills Insight to understand what skills are tested on the SAT. They should also check out their personalized My SAT online Score Report, which includes information about percentiles, a copy of the student’s essay and details about her or his performance on different types of questions. In addition there is a new website-bigfuture.org, which provides comprehensive, interactive online resource that can further help you plan for college.

Your official score report will be provided to you and your high school, if you included the school code-671863 -, about five weeks after the test. Students who register online and wish to receive a paper score report by mail in addition to the online score report must request it when they register. Students who register by mail and who do not have active College Board online accounts will continue to receive paper score reports.
